"Ages of experience have taught us that the commitment of a husband and wife to love and to serve one another promotes the welfare of children and the stability of society," Bush said in his weekly radio address. "Government, by recognizing and protecting marriage, serves the interests of all."
yeah, he's basically saying "we're perfect here in america and we can't ever do anything wrong ever, no way, i'm not listening naaaaaaaaaaaaa i'm not listening naaaaaaaaaaa!" it's straight up political pandering because he's scared of losing the majority in the house and senate. imagine that, having to actually work with others instead of just making sure your party keeps voting with you. interesting concept and one i just don't think our esteemed ape can bend his head around.
and for all you financial conservatives out there, don't vote republican. somewhere, somehow, they've become the big spenders of the party system. seriously. maybe it's the fact that the spinelessness of the democrats means they'll never spend any money on a war or two since they wouldn't get into a fight to save their lives. thing that drives me nuts at present (it changes a lot) is the fact that i have to chose between two parties that really don't represent what i believe in.

Many people vote what they feel are the lesser of two evils...if that is possible. But I do know this...I could not...would not...EVER vote a Republican into office...period! Sam I am.

As I wrote in the comments section of Shakespeare's Sister, what I take issue with is this statement;"For ages, in every culture, human beings have understood that marriage is critical to the well-being of families."
I know the President doesn't like to read, but if I could recommend some summer reading:
The Na of China, farmers in the Himalayan region, live without the institution of marriage. Na brothers and sisters live together their entire lives, sharing household responsibilities and raising the women's children. Because the Na, like all cultures, prohibit incest, they practice a system of sometimes furtive, sometimes conspicuous nighttime encounters at the woman's home. The woman's partners--she frequently has more than one--bear no economic responsibility for her or her children, and "fathers, " unless they resemble their children, remain unidentifiable.

i understand the sentiment, hun. what's funny is that for the most part i'd call myself a liberal just because they usually are closer to my beliefs than republicans. usually being the key term for me.
and fred, i love cool anthropological stories like that! especially when they reinforce what we all know, bush likes drinking himself into a stupor more than he likes anything logical or mentally stimulating.

still, i don't think you can deny that this only comes up when there's political gain to it. basically we hear about this and "patriotism" only during election season and only as a way to discredit candidates in the eyes of certain people. indeed, the pandering claim serves to alienate voters and ensure they come to a certain side, too. so it's just a matter of whom you put more faith in and having seen this administration work i can't believe this isn't motivated by God and politics because that's what's informed everything else about their government.
